How to Inspect Marble Slabs: A Field QC Guide
Accepting or rejecting a shipment of marble slabs usually comes down to a few hours spent on the factory floor. In seventeen years of field inspections, I have found that almost every problem that surfaces after a container is loaded could have been caught beforehand — provided the inspection is done in the right order.
This guide walks through how I inspect marble slabs, step by step, and what I look for at each stage.
1. Thickness Control
Thickness is always checked first. If the slabs fall outside the agreed range — a deviation of more than ±1.5 to 2 mm — the inspection stops there and the buyer is informed before anything else is examined. Only once the buyer approves does the inspection continue.
The order matters. Running a full inspection on material that is already out of thickness tolerance means spending hours on a lot that may be rejected anyway.
2. Concavity Check
Slabs that pass thickness control are then checked for concavity. This is an empirical, visual check rather than a measured one.
The polished faces of slabs resting against one another are examined from the side, looking for a gap, an area where the surfaces fail to make contact, or any bowing across the face.
3. Slab Numbering
Next comes the numbering applied to each slab on the production line. For bookmatch material this is critical: the numbers must run in unbroken sequence. Once the order is disturbed, the vein match is lost and the material no longer serves the purpose it was bought for.
4. Surface Finish and Repair
With the numbering verified, attention moves to surface finish and repair work. Slabs may be polished, honed, brushed, or leather finished (deep brushed).
Polished slabs
The most common defect is polishing waves — visible when the slab face is viewed at an angle. They typically appear at the head and tail of the slab, or where it enters and exits the polishing line.
The remedy is to run the slab through the polishing line again. Where the defect is slight, it can be resolved by trimming the affected section and taking the loss on dimension.
Honed slabs
On hard stones honed to a low grit, fine scratches become visible under close inspection. This is a serious defect and requires the slab to be re-honed at a higher grit.
One thing to watch: when slabs come straight off the line and are not yet fully dry, these scratches can be invisible. For this reason the honing of hard stones needs to be followed closely rather than signed off on first sight.
5. Cracks and Breakage
After the surface check, slabs are examined for cracks and breakage.
There is an important point here. Unless a problem is visible or the buyer has specifically requested it, slabs are not lifted and inspected one by one. The reason is straightforward: separating and handling every slab individually causes breakage. The inspection itself becomes the source of damage.
Instead, the bundle is assessed from its front and back faces for any visible sign of trouble. If something suggests a problem — or if the buyer has asked for it — only then are the slabs opened up individually.
6. Epoxy and Filling
Advances in stone processing mean a great many materials can now be worked using epoxy and mesh backing. That process, however, brings its own issues:
- Epoxy applied into cracks settling or sinking
- Air bubbles forming in the resin
- Pits left where stone has pulled away during polishing
These pits are repaired with the appropriate filler according to their size and depth. This is a normal stage of production, not a defect in itself.
Marble is porous, much like human skin. Those pores appearing from time to time is entirely normal, and they are closed through repair.
7. Selection Control
This stage runs on the terms you and your customer have agreed on — terms that are, more often than not, unwritten.
What matters is not how spectacular the selection looks, but where the line is drawn between good and bad, between first and second choice. That line is genuinely blurred, and the two parties rarely read it the same way.
This is precisely where a professional inspector earns their place.
And it is worth being honest about something: there is no fixed definition of selection. It changes with the material. A characteristic that drops a slab to second choice in one stone is exactly what the buyer is paying for in another. Heavy vein movement is a flaw in one material and the whole reason for buying in the next. The same holds for colour transitions, fossil traces and variations in texture.
Selection cannot be reduced to a checklist for this reason. The call has to be made by someone who knows both the stone and the buyer’s project. Experience weighs as heavily here as the material does.
In practice, the inspector’s job is to show the buyer concretely where the line has been drawn, explain the reasoning behind it, and make certain both sides understand the same thing by it. That is the only way an unwritten rule stops being open to dispute.
Before You Load the Container
A properly sequenced inspection before shipment removes the great majority of surprises that appear when the container is opened at the other end. It is far cheaper to reject a bundle in the factory than to argue about it after it has crossed a border.
